Get Your Degree and Own Your Home: Angela Barbee’s experience with Family Scholar House

Angela was a teen mom, who found out about Family Scholar House through the Teenage Parent Program (TAP). Since she started with Family Scholar House, she was able to get an affordable apartment to live in while she studied for her nursing degree.

She was pretty busy throughout her time at Family Scholar House, but she says it was well worth it for the support she received. She attended the cooking class, and met regularly with her academic coach. On the days that she didn’t have classes, she and her son would go to toddler book club.

Angela says that earning her college degree means everything to her. She is the only one in her family to graduate from college, and she is thankful that she can be a good role model for her children.

Angela is also a graduate of our Graduate to Homeownership program, meaning that she now owns her own house. She is excited about the stability that her house gives her children, and is looking forward to post-Covid family gatherings at her place.

“Life has not always been easy for me, but because I put in the work, I am able to provide a stable home and I’m able to be financially independent. And I’m proud of that,” says Angela.

We are very proud of Angela, too!
