Based in Louisville, KY, Family Scholar House. With a vision for student success and the economic development of human potential, Family Scholar House provides coordinated wrap-around services for students and their families. The non-profit was one of only five mature program recipients of the national 2020 Rise Prize recognizing programs with significant success in supporting student parents. Family Scholar House has 5 residential campuses in Louisville, home to 247 single-parent families and 32 foster alumni — all pursuing post-secondary education.
Yesterday, amid blowing snow and frigid temperatures, an excited group gathered on the Elizabethtown Community & Technical College campus to celebrate the groundbreaking for the new Family Scholar House campus to be built there. Years in the making, it is finally becoming a reality thanks to the unwavering support and dedication of the Hardin County community. When completed, it will provide housing for 48 single parents and their children as they work to complete their degrees -— a welcome addition to the services and resources Family Scholar House already provides on the ECTC campus.
At the speakers’ podium for the celebration were ECTC President Juston Pate, Family Scholar House President and CEO Cathe Dykstra, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman, Elizabethtown Mayor Jeff Gregory, Garry Watkins of Wabuck Development, Jennifer Swope of Swope Hyundai, Kristen Byrd with PNC, and Family Scholar House Participant Ambriona Smith.
On this momentous occasion, we're grateful to everyone who has played a role in bringing this vision to life. Your support — through donations, advocacy, or belief in our mission — has been instrumental in making this dream a reality. The impact of your involvement has already been felt in the community, and with the addition of affordable housing for student parents, we are excited to deepen that impact and provide even more opportunities for success.
This new campus will provide invaluable resources for student-parents, equipping them with the support they need to thrive academically while balancing the responsibilities of parenthood. We are confident that this initiative will not only transform the lives of the families we serve, but also have a lasting, positive effect on the entire Elizabethtown community.
