Based in Louisville, KY, Family Scholar House. With a vision for student success and the economic development of human potential, Family Scholar House provides coordinated wrap-around services for students and their families. The non-profit was one of only five mature program recipients of the national 2020 Rise Prize recognizing programs with significant success in supporting student parents. Family Scholar House has 5 residential campuses in Louisville, home to 247 student-parent families and 32 foster alumni — all pursuing post-secondary education.
Last month, Cathe Dykstra hosted several Sisters of St. Benedict for a tour of the MMY US manufacturing facility in Louisville where the modular apartments that will make up the new Family Scholar House campus at Ivy Tech in Sellersburg are being made.
As our tour guide, MMY CEO Robin Bartram-Brown, explained, these modular units will be assembled into two apartment buildings on the campus to house 36 participants pursuing a college degree (each apartment consists of two modular units).
Each apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, living room, two bedrooms, two baths and a small laundry room, with washers and dryers donated by GE Appliances, a haier company.
Because the Sisters were instrumental in helping this Family Scholar House get done in a single phase instead of two, it will be named the Benedictine Scholar House, building on the Sisters’ legacy in education extending back over more than a century and a half. Today is the 151st running of the famed Kentucky Derby, the most exciting two minutes in sports. But racing in the famed event takes more than just a fast thoroughbred. It takes discipline, training, awareness of strengths and weaknesses, recognition of the environment around them, and a lot of support from a passionate team.
Those are the same ingredients that help propel the success of each Family Scholar House participant, as they push themselves to be not only the best students they can be, but the best parents, the best community members and the best people. It’s a long track with more than a few turns, but there’s no thrill like watching someone navigate it with energy and focus and race across that finish line. ... See MoreSee Less
