For Career Month, here are ten tips for building a winning resume.
Make It Fit
Customize your resume for each position. Emphasize relevant skills and experiences that match the job description.
Make Use of Keywords
Many companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) that scan for keywords. So include industry-specific terms and phrases.
Make It Count
Use numbers, percentages, or specific outcomes to highlight your impact. “Increased sales by 25% in six months” is more powerful than “Improved sales.”
Make It Brief.
Stick to 1-2 pages. Focus on the most relevant and recent experience. Remove outdated or irrelevant positions.
Make It Clean.
Choose a simple layout with clear headings, consistent font styles, and plenty of white space to ensure readability.
Make It Matter
If you’re changing industries or roles, emphasize skills that apply across different settings, such as leadership, project management, or problem-solving.
Make It Active
Use dynamic words like “developed,” “managed,” “led,” and “executed” to convey a sense of accomplishment.
Make It Right
Typos and grammatical errors can be deal-breakers. Double-check for mistakes. Consider having someone else review it.
Make It Relevant
Showcase any certifications, licenses, or specialized training that make you a stronger candidate.
Make a Big First Impression
Start with a 2-3 sentence summary that highlights your expertise and what you bring to the table. ... See MoreSee Less
