Thrive
I remember back in 2020 talking with my friend about the agency she worked for and the services they provided people in the community. I was amazed by all of the different opportunities they offered and was determined to be involved. Shortly after, I became a single mother and everything changed. I would now not only be a full time student and intern, but would become one of the many families that Family Scholar House serves. I became a mother in 2021 and faced a lot of hardships and struggles. With help from the FSH staff, I have overcome a lot. The organization made it possible for me and my son to have access to safe and affordable housing and to continue my post-secondary education.
My pregnancy was very challenging both physically and mentally. The staff at Family Scholar House helped me get connected to resources that helped me focus on school and become my best self. They provided multiple opportunities for workshops that helped me identify my worth and the things I can accomplish. Being a single mother is not easy. At first, I thought the journey would be extremely difficult. Juggling school, caring for a newborn, and working is a lot to manage but Family Scholar House has made the transition much less stressful. Now, I believe the possibilities are endless.
Many people around me thought I would suffer because of my situation, they weren’t being supportive like I needed at that time. Moving into Family Scholar House and taking advantage of the resources that were there to help me, made a huge difference in my success. Not to mention an entire staff that always believed in me. They knew what I was capable of long before I did. Through art therapy and other amazing workshops, I’ve realized I can be great and am worthy of achieving my goals. I appreciate Family Scholar House for the fantastic work they are doing in the community. Thank you for supporting single-parents and young adults that have aged out of foster care. Programs like this make it possible for us to not only survive, but thrive.
