Why I Volunteer at Family Scholar House
As a double major in Liberal Studies and Communication at the University of Louisville, I’ve been searching for ways to get involved within my community throughout college to strengthen my communication skills. Through various volunteer experiences in Louisville, I’ve discovered that so much of my passion for communication and writing is embedded in service work and non-profits. This passion is easily connected with Family Scholar House’s mission, hence why getting involved with the organization has been such a gift.
My time volunteering at Family Scholar House has been incredibly impactful. I chose to volunteer here because of their evident commitment to families and education. One of my core values has always been education; education is critical to the growth of people and should always be a priority. Through being Deja’s, the Director of Community Engagement, Intern I’ve gotten to work closely with volunteers and participants and witness first-hand the impact FSH is making within the community. It’s been a pleasure to attend community events and see connections and growth. I’ve also enjoyed being able to work with volunteers specifically hearing why they chose FSH. Family Scholar is a place filled with people from all walks of life and that, I appreciate.
In particular, working with Deja on Adopt-a-Family has been the most impactful experience. There was one day specifically in December, just a few days before Christmas, when dozens of people and organizations were bringing in their donations. I could feel the holiday magic throughout the office. Seeing the donations pile up knowing the effect they would soon have on families was remarkable and something I won’t forget.
Family Scholar House is a place that has fostered personal growth for me within my field and as a human being and I’m very thankful to be involved with an organization that can do that.
