A Mother’s Worst Fear, to Greatest Blessing
“As a single mom, my worst fear is the inability to provide for my children. That fear became a reality when my rent was too high for me to cover on my own. I couldn’t believe I was in a position of having no choice, but to pack up my kids and our belongings, and move out. Just as we were unable to find a steady place to stay, I was having trouble keeping a steady job. As if it was not disheartening enough to be unable to provide a safe place to live, I struggled to parent my children the way I desired, as family members continually stepped in to do it for me. Although I am still thankful for their support, my kids needed stability, even if that only piece of stability was me. I am even more grateful for the home we have at Family Scholar House. We have a home where my children are safe and fed, and beyond that, Family Scholar House has aided my academic career as well so I can achieve my dreams.
Beyond my desire to have a safe place to live and raise my children, Family Scholar House has given me the opportunity to go back to school to become a nurse. FSH’s support has given me confidence in my abilities as a woman, mother, and future nurse. My family continues to learn and grow together. In fact, I love spending time with my kids as we do our homework together!
Family Scholar House has offered support in many ways. I’ve attended several workshops on learning how to manage money, starting a savings and checking account, and building credit. However, my favorite Family Scholar House event is café night. I love having the opportunity to share my triumphs and struggles with other participants who are in a similar phase of life as me. Our kids play together as the moms have a chance to talk with one another.
I am so appreciate of every opportunity Family Scholar House has provided. From free memberships to the Science Museum, holiday parties and (reverse) trick-or-treating, to tickets to events like the circus and Nutcracker, I am able to make memories with my children that will last a lifetime!
