Finding Hope and a Future: Danita’s Story

Family Scholar House has had a truly profound impact on my family. Hearing about FSH, felt like a literal sign from above. I knew I needed to provide for my child, and education was the path forward but the “how” was still unknown. That day, I drove by the Louisville Scholar House sign, discovering a program that seemed too good to be true. At that moment, I felt lost but after enrolling in the program I quickly found a community—staff, volunteers, and donors—who invested in us and our futures. To this day they remain my strong support system, constantly reminding me I’m not alone.

Through FSH and the support of the Siemer Institute, I gained invaluable knowledge in finances, budgeting, saving, and investing effectively. My daughter was also introduced to saving, spending, and investing – concepts we often discuss. My daughter and I found safety and a true sense of family within those walls. I had mini victories all along my path to graduation.

We had access to academic coaching, career coaching, mentors, financial education, parenting, and life skills workshops. These helped us to gain knowledge and boost our confidence in those areas. Each year, I’ve been blessed to see progress, not only in the classroom but, in all areas of life. The journey can be long and difficult so these little victories motivated me to achieve self-sufficiency.

I proudly graduated (one of 870 degrees earned by FSH families) from the University of Louisville and now work in criminal justice, a milestone made possible by FSH. My eyes are set on home ownership.  My daughter graduated early from high school and is now at the University of Louisville, committed to serving others just like I am. In my spare time, I now have the opportunity to serve families, like mine through FSH’s Response Center. I’m on the other side of the phone, serving as a sounding board, connector to resources, and spark of hope to keep moving forward to that single mom calling in. Together, my family embodies the incredible impact that Family Scholar House and the Siemer Institute have on generations to come.  But make no mistake, there are hundreds of other families just like mine, grateful for the community’s investment in FSH and honored to have an opportunity to realize our full potential.
