How I Spent My Summer…
Each summer we look forward to partnering with the SummerWorks program. Below, Marie, one of our SummerWorks members, reflected back on her time with Family Scholar House.
When I first heard about SummerWorks, I knew I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. Since I am going into my junior year, I wanted a valuable experience to add to my application for college and give back to my community. There were so many different options through SummerWorks which allow you to choose the best fit for you.
I started working at Family Scholar House and it was my first job ever. I didn’t know what to expect especially with COVID-19 and daily tasks looking very different but I was excited to learn. Family Scholar House is an agency that supports and empowers individuals and families to achieve their goals and ultimately reach full self-sufficiency. During my time, I have done a little bit of everything. I’ve helped pack up pantry essentials, diapers and wipes for our single-parents. I’ve delivered supplies and educational packets for our kids of all ages to the doorsteps of FSH families. I’ve talked with staff at FSH and through SummerWorks about professionalism, budgeting and preparing to apply and choose a college. Throughout my time working with Family Scholar House and SummerWorks I’ve learned a lot, I couldn’t have asked for a better first job, and I’m grateful for the individuals that have talked with me, taught me and encouraged me. I am looking forward to hopefully working with SummerWorks again next year!
