Music to our Ears!
Since first coming to Family Scholar House in April of 2020, I have had the honor to serve our families and watch them grow in each avenue of their life. As Family Scholar House’s Health and Wellness Coach, it is my job to make sure our families are succeeding in all parts of their wellness. From supporting families in their mental wellness through therapy resources, to helping improve nutrition and physical activity, to providing opportunities for self-care; wellness is something everyone can use in their journey to self-sufficiency. Supporting families in their wellness goals and watching them make their all over health a priority, has been a very moving part of my job. As single parents, the last thing on one’s mind is how can I make more time for myself and my overall wellbeing? How can I ensure my child(ren) are receiving all the wellness opportunities available to them? Yet they still find a way to better themselves so they provide the best future for themselves and their children.
Therapy is such an important part of wellness, and for our participant’s children processing feelings and trauma can be hard to do with words. This month, music therapists from UofL’s music therapy clinic are coming to Family Scholar House to provide an opportunity for our little scholars to process their emotions through music. The mission of UofL MTC is to make Louisville communities richer and healthier through music, and that is exactly what they do! The sessions are open to all ages of children and improvisational in nature as they respond to the needs of individual children or the group as a whole. Experiences may include playing instruments, singing songs, creating rhythms, and in general supporting their development.
We have received so much positive feedback from our parents who said their children thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity. Most of our kids don’t want to leave or for the music to end! We are so grateful to UofL MTC who made this opportunity possible for our families to use music as a form of therapy. The joy it brings our children is priceless. The smiles on their faces was like music to our ears!
