Support & Success
I became a single mom at the age of 18. I was homeless and in High School when my son was born. Family Scholar House helped change my life in a significant way. Family Scholar House granted me the privilege of having a safe home for me and my son, while I focused on earning my degree. They also provided me with much more than shelter but a support system and community I could rely on. Before entering the program, I didn’t have the support I needed at that time to be a successful student and mother.
Family Scholar House single-handedly gave me all the tools I needed for success. Everything from tutoring, networking opportunities, financial workshops, and job fairs. I am beyond grateful for the Family Scholar House Program because I was able to continue my education after High School, while also being able to be the best mom possible. Being able to provide him a safe space means everything to me. Giving him his own room meant the world because that is something I didn’t have growing up.
With all of the tools and resources Family Scholar House provided me, I am proud to say I am graduating from the University of Louisville with my Bachelors of Science in Communications. I recently received an offer letter for the Emerging Talent program that will pay for me and my son to relocate to Nashville and I will be working as an intern in their A&R department.
Community has always been so important to me. I look forward to finally being self-sufficient so I am able to give back. I would love to work with single parents and tell them about this program because I know it would help them the same way it helped me and my son. As a first generation college student it can be difficult to navigate all that it takes to succeed in your education, and I am so glad I had the support from Family Scholar House to get me where I am today.
