Five Years. Three Degrees. How Patricia Brown Turned Opportunity into Achievement.

When Patricia Brown arrived at Family Scholar House, she wasn’t just beginning a new chapter. She was beginning motherhood.

With her three-week-old son, Ethan, in her arms, Patricia walked through the doors looking for stability and an opportunity to build a better future. What she found was a community ready to invest in her success.

“They offered me an apartment, signed my lease, and it was just so impactful and encouraging to be a part of the program,” Patricia says.

That moment became the foundation for an extraordinary journey.

Over the next five years, Patricia earned not one, but three college degrees. She began at Jefferson Community and Technical College, where she completed her Associate of Arts degree. From there, she transferred to the University of Louisville, earning her Bachelor of Social Work before being accepted into the Kent School of Social Work to pursue her master’s degree in medical social work with a concentration in psychosocial oncology.

She graduated this month.

While her academic accomplishments are remarkable, Patricia is quick to point out that she didn’t accomplish them alone.

Family Scholar House surrounded her with the resources and encouragement she needed to keep moving forward. Academic coaching helped her navigate college. Career coaching prepared her for interviews and professional opportunities. Her advocate checked in regularly, helping her stay focused on her goals while balancing the daily realities of parenting and school.

“They helped me with school, academic coaching, and I had a career coach. I had an advocate that helped me with my everyday life and checked in monthly to see how my progress was going and all of my goals, making sure I was knocking out those goals and executing them.”

That support paid dividends beyond the classroom. Patricia is now completing her practicum at the VA, an opportunity she credits in part to the interview preparation and guidance she received through Family Scholar House.

“I was able to attain that with a lot of interviewing coaching. They sent me things on how to interview, the questions to ask, and how to prepare.”

Today, Ethan is five years old. In the same five years that he has grown from a newborn into a curious young boy, Patricia has transformed her own future through education, perseverance, and hard work.

Her story is a powerful reminder that Family Scholar House doesn’t earn degrees for participants. Instead, it provides the stable housing, personalized support, coaching, and encouragement that allow determined parents to accomplish goals they may once have thought were out of reach.

Patricia’s success belongs to her. But it is also a testament to what becomes possible when talent, determination, and opportunity come together.

As she looks toward a career helping patients and families navigate some of life’s most difficult moments, Patricia hopes other single parents will see themselves in her story.

“I encourage every woman who is a single mom. I have a child—he’s five years old. In five years since I’ve had him, I’ve gotten three degrees. So nothing can stop you. Thank God for everything He’s done.”

For Patricia, Family Scholar House didn’t define her future. It gave her the foundation to build it herself.
