Starting An Internship Amid a Pandemic

Starting an internship amid a pandemic has been nothing short of unique, especially at Family Scholar House.

Before my internship, I had no idea what to expect with covid-19 restrictions or if my internship would even still happen, but Family Scholar House was determined to make it work. Since then, I have observed google hangout meetings and assessments, and helped deliver diapers and meals to the Family Scholar House residents. It has been amazing to see how everyone here creates a way to assist people in whatever way they can even in such a wavering time. Collecting donations such as diapers, food, and school supplies to ensure that the residents have everything they need to succeed in such a trying time and changing meetings to online formats.

Meeting everyone remotely has been different, but also amazing. In meetings, you see people’s children and pets pop into the screen and get to learn a side of them that you otherwise may never have. It also makes it that much more special when you get to interact with people in person, both employees and participants! Everyone has had to adjust to a new way of life by working primarily remotely, but they have done so in such a great way and being able to still connect with each other.

This unique experience has allowed me to see how much Family Scholar House really cares for their participants and has taught me how to efficiently adapt in uncertain situations and still be able to assist others. They have gone above the normal expectations to ensure that everyone is taken care of and to make everyone feel as connected as possible. While I will be excited for life to go back to somewhat normal, I am very thankful for this special experience that I have had and look forward to what I will learn in the next couple of months here.
