Seemingly overnight, COVID-19 turned our world upside down. Just a few months ago, we roamed the world freely without masks or gloves. We weren’t worried about being 6 feet apart or making others feel uncomfortable when you pass them in the grocery aisle. We lived our normal lives, the way we always have, and had no reason to think this virus could rock our world so severely.

Work is another situation. While many have lost their jobs, others are considered essential and go in every day to provide services that keep our lives somewhat normal. Another group of people are now working from home. Some may know the struggle, but try being a full time mom and teacher now that schools and daycares are closed, on top of working from home. For our single parents, they are also fighting to be successful while balancing heavy course loads and no help managing their kids.

Two of our participants earned prestigious marketing internships this summer that were cancelled due to COVID-19. Of course, it’s completely understandable why the company made that decision, but it’s disappointing to say the least for our participants. They spent hours perfecting their resumes and cover letters, scoured through Linda’s Closet to find the perfect interview outfit, and practiced how they would answer tough questions. The high of being offered the internship could only be crushed by something as life-changing as COVID-19. That being said, both young women have maintained extremely positive attitudes regarding their lost opportunity.

Our Commonwealth is full of resilient people. Family Scholar House is full of resilient single parents. As a community, we stand together. We will get through this together. #TogetherKY
