Family Scholar House has a rich history, originating in 1995 as an organization for Louisvillian mothers, then known as Project Women. Individuals from the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Sisters of Loretto, Dominican Sisters of Peace, Sisters of the Good Shepherd, and Sisters of Mercy joined together with the vision to support single mothers pursuing post-secondary education.

Chosen by The Voice as Best Girls’ Night Out (2017) and Best Fashion Show (2018, this annually sold-out event is a party on and for a mission. Guests sip fine wines, shop designer fashions, mingle with The Shoe Guys, enjoy a glamorous fashion show, bid on live and silent auction items, enter a raffle to win a $10,000 shopping spree, and enjoy each other’s company all while raising money for the programs and services at Family Scholar House.
Have you ever been to a place where you instantly felt like you belonged and don’t know how it took you so long to get there? In the small amount of time I’ve been employed at Family Scholar House, those are just a few things I reflect on almost everyday. I don’t think I could tell you specifics of the first time I interacted with Family Scholar House, but I can sure tell you about how much it has impacted me as of recently.
Art therapy is one of the many available resources we offer at Family Scholar House. Our art therapist works with our parents, children, and young adults to use self-expression through painting, drawing, and other artistic activities. 95% of our participants are survivors of domestic violence. With that being said, we have found many prefer processing their trauma through art. This is also a good way for us to work with our younger children, who may struggle using words to express their big emotions.
I can not share my experience of motherhood without mentioning my experiences with the Family Scholar House and the impact it has had on me. My time within the program has been curated for my unique needs, and it provided an environment of grace.
