The Little Shoes

Sometimes people come into your life, whether by fate or coincidence, and leave a lasting impact. I recently had that experience when I was given the opportunity to meet a scholar and her young son while delivering a pair of shoes to them. Upon entering their apartment, her son ran to me with the biggest smile that lit up the room. I could tell immediately he had never met a stranger, and his big dark eyes and to-die-for curls could win over anyone.

My FSH Band

To me, the Family Scholar House has been a reset button. It is a place where I came and reset my thoughts, feelings, and goals. It has been a place of healing and growth for not only me, but also my child, and the other families that share this space with us. To me, Family Scholar House is a place of unity where everyone can come together as mothers, children, students, and working single parents. We share our stories in support of one another, to show each other that we are all worthy, and that a reset is okay.

New Year, New Beginnings

As we enter 2021, we are urged to have strength and courage in the face of uncertainty. For most of us that can feel understandably overwhelming and scary. For Kacie, one of our 2020 graduates, she faces this year with hope, gratitude and pride, despite a background of hardships, challenges and loss.

We have all had those moments where we need help and are unsure where to turn. Often our pride, or fear for our safety, keeps us from asking for the assistance we need. When individuals are in need, we want to make sure a helping hand is free, easily accessible, up-to-date and safe. From that desire, was created by Family Scholar House in collaboration with Metro United Way’s 2-1-1 program. It is our community’s safety net web-based app.

Good Neighbors

One of the most enlightening memories from my childhood was of a spontaneous week night picnic with a neighbor family. I was 7 or 8 years old and although I saw it all as it occurred, it wasn’t until a few years later that I really understood what had happened.
